outfit | goodbye, farewell Domino Dollhouse

I was originally going to title this post “and the sky was made of amethyst” or “bricks are heavy” as I usually title my posts after lyrics or song titles. But that’s not the only reason why, it’s also because I am featuring this killer pretend that we’re dead grid print vest from indie plus retailer, Domino Dollhouse.

The entire line is inspired by grunge goddesses like Hole, Garbage, L7

It was kind of a match made in heaven.

But  I changed the title last minute as sad news hit late last week, Tracy, owner and designer of Domino Dollhouse let the cat out the bag, Domino Dollhouse will be closing.

I know, you’re heart is probably crumbling right now. In just a short two week span, we have lost two pillars of the alt indie plus community. { CandyStrike has also closed it’s doors, Elizabeth has started school again and the load was too much to carry both her indie brand and a full school course. }

Though Candy Strikes closure was much more swift, Domino Dollhouse will be around until November. So you still have a chance to snag a few pieces from her latest line, Doll Parts.

I am so happy to finally have a piece of Domino Dollhouse in my wardrobe.

I remember about 3 or 4 years ago when I finally became aware of her shop. I was in a rut and desperately searching for awesome alternative clothing choices and not just making due with what I could get elsewhere. The very first item I coveted was a bright pink floral moto vest, much like this one I have here.

It was a bold, feminine, in your face, holy-shit-I’ve-never-seen-anything-like-this-in-plus-size-before kind of revelation. The vest was sold out of my size, but my eyes were watching what was going on.

Through DD I was introduced to Tess Holiday { then she was known as Tess Munster } who I started following on instagram, way back when my feed was nothing more than drag queens, make up artists and tattooers. I look at my feed now and it’s a fatshion, body positive, weirdo arty collective of awesome that I can’t imagine my day’s without! { the drag queens are still there too! }

So I have to thank Domino Dollhouse, even though it took me so long to finally own a piece, and I regret I don’t own more, they kind of sent me on course to realise a truth of mine, that plus size fashion is my absolute passion in life and there are other ways to get involved that I had never conceived before.

Thank you, for serving our community so well for so many years! Good luck with your growing family! I will await and hopefully be part of the next new thing to spring up for us alt plus gals.

So here we find ourselves down two alternative plus resources. Where are we to turn next? Who will rise to occasion and fill the gap? It’s clear there are plenty of alternative plus gals around, but where shall we shop, who will design for us?

outfit | killing me softly

I swoon!

Over these photos taken by Jesse Smith and particularly over this Bianca chiffon duster from SWAK.

I told you you’d get sick of this hat!!! But it’s in one more outfit from this shoot day, so bare with me.

I have to say, I felt pretty powerful in this outfit. The duster would catch the breeze and I felt like a frickin model! This is going to be very popular over a simple outfit of black leggings with a tank and it will notch the fashion level up on such a comfy and simple outfit.

It comes in two prints, but my heart belongs to black lace, so it was the obvious pick for me!

It’s just so pretty!

Something else about these photos, I am wearing ankle booties, with bare legs. This is something young me would have never done. I used to HATE my stems with a fiery passion. If I wore anything that cut me off above the ankle I thought I looked atrocious. But now, my legs may just be my favourite body part! I love showing them off and I get compliments all the time!

Just goes to show, that tailoring your media can open your eyes that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. And it allows you the chance to see it in yourself and in others.

outfit | makes me wanna cry

Oh, that title is misleading.

But maybe this dress makes me want to cry tears of joy.  But even more accurately, it’s my first purchase from UK brand Boohoo, and I am SMITTEN!

Boohoo “Robyn Double Layer” dress | bag – Avenue {sold out similar here }

This dress is breezy, flirty and comfortable!

I ordered it in a Canadian 20 {UK 24} and it is generous in size, I think I could have sized down one size. But It flows nicely, I love it anyway.

The fabric is polyester, but because of the cut and fit, it’s still really cool. And it unwrinkled like a dream if you pop it in the dryer for 5 minutes!

This dress is almost sold out, so get on it quick!!

IMG_5715Canadian plus size blogger, Margot Meanie, wearing Boohoo plus Canadian plus size blogger, Margot Meanie, wearing Boohoo plus

I also ordered a long line sleeveless cardi which will be featured soon! I can’t wait to rock it for Autumn. It’s a gorgeous knit, with a waterfall lapel and it belts. Totally dreamy!

In addition to these two total scores, there was one flop. I ordered the Leila mesh crop bikini. I didn’t even bother tryng on the bottoms once I tried on the top and saw what a disaster it was. There was zero support, my boobs literally fall out the bottom of the top. Then there were other disappointing features, like the “cup” molding pieces {which were tiny} weren’t sewn in place, so they float around, spin around, move around, I don’t know if mine was faulty, or that’s how they make them all. But that was a MAJOR let down.

But let’s not end this post on a downer…

Are you going to participate in my #rebelliousselflove challenge in September? I would love to see you bright shining faces flipping the bird! Feel free to share this image and you can start using the hashtag now if you feel it!

Untitled-2

alternativecurves | alter ego

Hello! Long time no blog!

I inadvertently took most of July off from the blog. I was everywhere else online, just not here. I’ve had a slew of plans and trips and it left me with no time to catch up on everything I wanted to blog about.I guess that’s Summer telling me to get outsde and off the computer!

I do want to thank you all for the absolutely astounding support for my last two blog posts, “Plus Size Swimwear & “A Plus Girls Guide to Wearing Crop Tops: 5 ways to introduce crop tops to your wardrobe

I return to you today with my entry for my beloved AlternativeCurves blog hop!

If you don’t know what that is, let me tell you! Alternativecurves was a hashtag I founded on instagram as an open call to find other alternative, off beat and non mainstream fashion existing on plus size and inbetweenie bodies.  It caught on like wild fire with the help of Kobi from Horror Kitsch Bitch. She encouraged me to expand and offered help in anyway possible. With that, I created a community based instagram account and Kobi initiated the alternativecurves blog hop in an effort to bring alternative bloggers around the globe together!

If you are a blogger and interested in joining us, feel free to join our facebook group or follow alternativecurves on instagram!

Now to this months theme: Alter Ego.

I was pretty excited by this months theme and have been aching to get photos done all month. I just finally was able to have a day to get this all together right before the hop closes, in 13 hours! PHEW!

I have been described as a “style chameleon”, so with that I suppose comes with many alter egos. So today I have decided to share 4 of my most favourite alter egos that you will see exist in my everyday style. Without further ado, here are my alter egos

The Witch

alter ego "the witch" | Margot Meanie alternative plus size blogger

To me, everyday is an opportunity to celebrate Hallowe’en. It’s my favourite holiday of the year. It’s spooky and creepy and is littered with magic, mystery and supernatural.

But its not just about Hallowe’en either. I was raised in a house that had crystals, tarot, ruins, pendulums and more. So I have always had a deep fondness for witches in general and the aura of mystery, healing arts and everyday magic is immensely appealing to me.

I do admit to being a skeptic as well , but I remain with an open mind to all the possibilities out there. Why close any one idea out completley? I would say I am half Mulder and half Scully.

Duckie

alter ego "Duckie" | Margot Meanie alternative plus size blogger

I’ve mentioned this many times before, but I’ll say it again. I LOVE Duckie!

Duckie is from one of my favourite movies from the 80’s, Pretty in Pink. I generally love all of the fashion from that movie, but Duckie reigns supreme! Head to toe, Duckie has flare and a master of layering.

He makes me wish I had a bolero tie! But I finally got my mitts on some rad platform pointed toe brogues late last year to emulate his worn in pointed creepers! I am one happy girl!

The Flapper

alter ego "the flapper" | Margot Meanie alternative plus size blogger

Flappers hold a special place in my heart. Mostly because deep down, below my social anxiety, is a party girl! If you were to ask my my ideal night out, it would be dressed to the nines, bopping around hotel bars getting fancy cocktails and then retiring to a friends home to dance the night away til dawn with just a small group.

I love drinking bubbly and mixing old fashioned cocktails, I love dramatic make up and wearing a garçonne silhouette on my extremely curvy frame! Flappers always know where the party is, because they are a party unto themselves!

Wednesday Addams

alter ego "Wednesday Addams" | Margot Meanie alternative plus size blogger

Oh, I just can’t help myself. When I was younger, I wanted to grow up to be Morticia Addams, she was so elegant. But in truth, I ended up more like Wednesday and I am perfectly fine with that. I guess it also stems from the fact I just never want to grow up and also that creepy macabre things amuse me.

I know “the witch” and Wednesday may seem similar, but I find the witch to be more serious, more mysterious, more supernatural. Where Wednesday is a tad more playful, with nods to childhood and playing with creepy crawlies, skulls and bat toys.

So there you have it, 4 of my “alter ego’s” so to speak. I think I have many others, there’s “the fan girl“, “the minimalist“, hell, “the maximalist“, “Edina Monsoon“, “the riot grrrl” really, the list could go on, but perhaps those will be future blogs all on their own.

Who is your alter ego? I would love to hear!

And please, check out the other babes participating in this months blog hop!

outfit | grunge

oh my stars!  Thank you all so much for all the love from my first tutu post { bold }.  I was really stepping out of my comfort zone with all that ‘non black’ happening, haha!!

In keeping with my how to rock a tutu theme leading up to my birthday I have yet another look for you!

Today’s foray into tutu-ness is definitely within my comfort zone, it’s actually flashing back to my rock n roll roots.  Though I no longer wear this studded belt I could never give it up, it used to be an everyday staple in my wardrobe, not to mention studded bracelets and well, studded everything.  I haven’t grown out of loving studs, I just incorporate them into my outfits differently. But this was a fun flash back and homage to my style in my early 20’s.

This one is dedicated to all my punk rock princesses who don’t ever want to grow up.

For this look, I decided to play up the hard vs soft as much as I possibly could.  So I paired the now chopped tutu with pink metallic Doc Martens, my very old and worn down studded belt, a denim vest decked out in my favourite buttons and a solid black crop.

My next tutu outfit is completely different!! Keep your eyes out for it later this week!!

covet | the pink ladies

Are you too pure to be pink?

This shopping guide was inspired by several things all aligning with one another;

  • A hankering to re-watch Grease has grasped me lately as I’ve been seeing some pink lady lovin’ gifsets on tumblr
  • Being tasked to make a theme post with my interpretation of ‘girl gang’ with my #untamedstyle virtual girl gang
  • Seeing these kickass, cotton candy, studded leather jackets all over instagram and tumblr, and they’re making me drool.

All arrows pointed to me deciding to modernize The Pink Ladies uniform!

Now since Killstar co. only really services XL & sometimes XXL I figured I’d add in this perfect substitute from Addition Elle.  That way you can DIY it up to your own liking.  I never thought I’d want to own a baby pink moto before, but HOLY CRAP, it’s risen to one of my top most coveted pieces!! { hey, it’s my birthday coming up in less than a month, if anyone wants to treat me 😉 ..ha! yeah right }

I threw in some cute girl gang stickers by one of my favourite indie/tumblr artists, a take no guff pin to adorn your jacket or bag as well as a pocket mirror to fix your lipstick.  Some ridiculously awesome holographic platform shoes for stomping the patriarchy, some high waisted, distressed shorts, flashy cat eye shades, a couple options for bad babe tops and some crystal knuckle dusters for fending yourself when you get in hot water!

I cannot express how BAD I want every item on this covet list! *sigh*

outfit | I shall wear midnight

Yesterday I was knocked off my feet with sad news of the passing of an author that is very dear to my heart.  Sir Terry Prachett created one of my all time favourite worlds in his Discworld series.  He brought entire worlds and gods { though they were small } to life, he satirized and made commentary on many tricky subjects.  He had an amazing vision and an enormous sense of humour.

I Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry Pratchett

He tickled my fancy.

He made me laugh on public transit many a time.  In fact, I found common bonds form with strangers.  Either you would see strangers or they would see you reading one of his books and there would be a slight understanding and appreciation of good people.  You’d give each other a quite nod and smile, acknowledging the wonderfulness of his worlds that exists in those pages.

I often greet the news of celebrity death with a somber, yet cool manner.  I mean, it saddens me, but generally doesn’t ruin my day.  That cannot be said about Terry Pratchett, I found myself brought to tears multiple times throughout the day as memorials and articles were posted on social media.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

He wrote over 40 books that exist on the flat planet { which rests on the backs of four elephants, which in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle floating through space } known as Discworld.  I would have to say that the Moist Von Lipwig books are my favourite, they are also the some of the most recent, but honestly, there are so many good books, story lines and characters, it’s hard to pick which to recommend first. { Don’t be daunted by the whole ’40 books in a series’ thing, they are pretty much all stand alone books and you can really start anywhere.  Though there are guides if you are interested in delving into the world that is Discworld, but I think they make it look more complicated than it is.  I personally have only read about 10 – 15 of them and in any damn order I felt like. }

I Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry PratchettI Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry PratchettI Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry PratchettI chose to share this outfit post today because I can think nothing better than expressing myself through two of my favourite mediums, fashions and books.  The title of one of his books was just so fitting, “I shall wear midnight” is based on a young witch named Tiffany Aching.  I feel like I’m rocking a bit of modern witch looks here, Deathly Hallows mark included { interesting tidbit: Terry Pratchett is the second most read UK author, behind J.K. Rowling }

It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It’s called living.

For now, I will busy myself with re-reading some old favourites as well as catching up on some of the books I have yet to read.

He will be missed, but his creations live on and that is comforting.

Are you a Pratchett fan?  Or better yet, who are your favourite authors & books?
