outfit | goodbye, farewell Domino Dollhouse

I was originally going to title this post “and the sky was made of amethyst” or “bricks are heavy” as I usually title my posts after lyrics or song titles. But that’s not the only reason why, it’s also because I am featuring this killer pretend that we’re dead grid print vest from indie plus retailer, Domino Dollhouse.

The entire line is inspired by grunge goddesses like Hole, Garbage, L7

It was kind of a match made in heaven.

But  I changed the title last minute as sad news hit late last week, Tracy, owner and designer of Domino Dollhouse let the cat out the bag, Domino Dollhouse will be closing.

I know, you’re heart is probably crumbling right now. In just a short two week span, we have lost two pillars of the alt indie plus community. { CandyStrike has also closed it’s doors, Elizabeth has started school again and the load was too much to carry both her indie brand and a full school course. }

Though Candy Strikes closure was much more swift, Domino Dollhouse will be around until November. So you still have a chance to snag a few pieces from her latest line, Doll Parts.

I am so happy to finally have a piece of Domino Dollhouse in my wardrobe.

I remember about 3 or 4 years ago when I finally became aware of her shop. I was in a rut and desperately searching for awesome alternative clothing choices and not just making due with what I could get elsewhere. The very first item I coveted was a bright pink floral moto vest, much like this one I have here.

It was a bold, feminine, in your face, holy-shit-I’ve-never-seen-anything-like-this-in-plus-size-before kind of revelation. The vest was sold out of my size, but my eyes were watching what was going on.

Through DD I was introduced to Tess Holiday { then she was known as Tess Munster } who I started following on instagram, way back when my feed was nothing more than drag queens, make up artists and tattooers. I look at my feed now and it’s a fatshion, body positive, weirdo arty collective of awesome that I can’t imagine my day’s without! { the drag queens are still there too! }

So I have to thank Domino Dollhouse, even though it took me so long to finally own a piece, and I regret I don’t own more, they kind of sent me on course to realise a truth of mine, that plus size fashion is my absolute passion in life and there are other ways to get involved that I had never conceived before.

Thank you, for serving our community so well for so many years! Good luck with your growing family! I will await and hopefully be part of the next new thing to spring up for us alt plus gals.

So here we find ourselves down two alternative plus resources. Where are we to turn next? Who will rise to occasion and fill the gap? It’s clear there are plenty of alternative plus gals around, but where shall we shop, who will design for us?

outfit | killing me softly

I swoon!

Over these photos taken by Jesse Smith and particularly over this Bianca chiffon duster from SWAK.

I told you you’d get sick of this hat!!! But it’s in one more outfit from this shoot day, so bare with me.

I have to say, I felt pretty powerful in this outfit. The duster would catch the breeze and I felt like a frickin model! This is going to be very popular over a simple outfit of black leggings with a tank and it will notch the fashion level up on such a comfy and simple outfit.

It comes in two prints, but my heart belongs to black lace, so it was the obvious pick for me!

It’s just so pretty!

Something else about these photos, I am wearing ankle booties, with bare legs. This is something young me would have never done. I used to HATE my stems with a fiery passion. If I wore anything that cut me off above the ankle I thought I looked atrocious. But now, my legs may just be my favourite body part! I love showing them off and I get compliments all the time!

Just goes to show, that tailoring your media can open your eyes that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. And it allows you the chance to see it in yourself and in others.

outfit | Ravens for Babens

ok, that title was a streeeeetch!! haha…but it goes well with Wednesdays post “crows before bros” where I featured one of my pieces from indie designer, Candy Strike.

Today I bring you some boho, gothy, monochrome chicness.

blazer – c/o Cool Gal Blue | crop – c/o Candy Stike  | bag – c/o Avenue { sold out }

I styled this look two ways. The first with a blazer to show how I would wear this three quarters of the year { Fall, Winter, Spring }. The Second with a vest, which I could wear another three quarters of the year, { Spring, Summer Fall…Hooray for moderate, pacific north west weather! } The vest is also an old staple piece bought long long ago from f21+.

The blazer is from Cool Gal Blue, you can get it in black from my collection or you can get it in White or Coral from Jessica Kane’s collection { I guess I hit the nail on the head with finding that gem, so much so Jessica loved it enough to include it in her collection as well! }

The crop is my second piece gifted from Candy Strike.  I have to say, I was surprised when I opened my package to see and feel the fabric. I had originally thought when we ran the contest on alternativecurves that the fabric would be a cotton blend/jersey type of fabric, but in actuality, it’s spandex! I really like how the fabric sits and the added weight really makes the skater skirt sit well and the top drapes across the bust in a really pleasing way! I do admit, when I saw Elizabeth sent me 2X’s, I was nervous. My chest always bumps me up to 3X’s, but in this case, it fit really well.

The skirt is an older maxi dress I got from forever 21 + well over a year ago. I really like that I can convert it to a skirt by folding the jersey fabric tank top underneath. Though a funny thing is, the more I wear sheer clothing and crop tops and the more comfortable in my body I am, the more I think, hmm, “that inside hemline need to come up a bit to show off more leg“, or “maybe I don’t need to wear an undershirt under this sheer blouse, I can just rock a bra or bandeau“, it’s liberating and refreshing and shows the power of dressing for yourself.

You’ve all seen this hat, as it’s a tried and true staple, also from f21 { seriously, I do get a lot of cheap staples/scores from f21, don’t I?! }. The sunnies are from my Cool Gal collection as well, but they are all sold out.

I also accessorized with my avenue bag, thrifted sandals, some vintage necklaces, metallic tattoo accents under my eyes, a moody lippy blend and earrings by etsy seller peachtreats.

I hope you all have some wonderful weekend plans ahead! My Father in Law is headed out for a fun weekend, including a massive streetfest on Sunday. I’ll make sure to snap and instagram my day on “The Drive” { it’s the popular nickname for my neighbourhood } But before all that, we have a big backyard BBQ planned for this evening that I am about to run off and start prep and set up for!

untamed style | zodiac fashion

I am so so so late in posting this! I inadvertently took a wee break from blogging after all the excitement from the Cool Gal Blue collection launch last week! {which, btw, was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who ordered pieces, I cannot wait to see you all in your items! Some items are selling out, but there are a few pieces left in different sizes, so go check it out! Oh and please, make sure to tag me and use the hashtag #coolgalMargot to show up in me feed on the the cool gal site! }

It just so happens that last week while I was busy with all the hub bub of clothing excitement, I was also due to participate in a fun group post with my #untamedstyle sisters!

This months theme was Zodiac Fashion and I have to admit to being a little stumped when thinking of how to put together an outfit with my sign in mind.  I am an Aries and on every site I read they mentioned “red”, “warrior queens”, “diva” and other signifiers I just didn’t feel in line with. But one word kept popping up, on almost every site I visited to gain inpso from and that word was “bold”, and that is one word I definitely do identify with.

Something you may not know about me, but I am actually very shy in person, especially when meeting for the first time. I think that by making bold statements with my clothing choices it can act as an icebreaker. It gives me something to talk about that is on my terms and is a topic I like to speak about passionately. So it can really help and put me at ease.

But at the same time, I can wear a bold outfit like armour, it will build my confidence and make me feel imposing to those I do not wish to interact with. it’s amazing how you can keep some at bay with a strong outfit and a bit of resting bitch face.

So today, I am sharing a bold outfit I wore to the Horse Track on the day of the Belmont Stakes.  I like the idea that people will dress up for the track, especially on special race days. It gives ladies a chance to dress up and don fancy hats or fun fascinators. It’s optimal people watching, especially whilst hiding behind gigantic sunnies!

{ it was a tad windy and my fascinator was blowing in weird shapes, I kinda have a summer witch look gong on here! hehe! the bottom photos show how the fascinator usually sits. }

hat – DIY | dress – Zelie for She {last year} | shorts – Cool Gal Blue | sandals – thrifted

I made this fascinator only an hour before we left for the afternoon.  I’ve had the idea kicking around in the back of my mind for a few months now and I *may* be a bit of a fabric hoarder, so I have lots of interesting bits laying about waiting to be turned into something fun and fabulous!

This dress is by Zelie for She, this one is from last year, but she has similar styles in right now, but they are full of tropical colour, perfect for summer time! { ooh, check out Cynthia from flight of the fat girl’s post in her Zelie dress!! *swoons!* }

A neighbour had made mention of how hot it was out and how I must be cooking dressed in head to toes black, but in all honestly, I wasn’t dying in the heat whatsoever. This dress is completely breezy and I was wearing my cool gal black lace shorts underneath with an old tube top.  It was the epitome of comfort meets glamour and I was really feeling it!

And since I was wearing so much black, I decided to go light and fun with my makeup. Bright yellow and pink eyeshadows, paired with my pink velvetine lipstick from Lime Crime and a shimmering highlight powder by Nars made for a playful summer make up.

Oh! You may have noticed my hair is now pink!! If you follow me on instagram then you’ve already seen me take photos of the process! I will be making a full post about dying my hair at some point in the near future!

…aaaand, I’m trying to snapchat too! { my user name is ‘mewmewmeanie’ }

outfit{s} | the Margot Meanie collection for Cool Gal Blue

It’s finally here, the launch day of my first collection with retailer Cool Gal Blue!

I am so excited to finally be sharing a few of the pieces with you today! Check out the shop to see the rest of the items! I am so proud to be working hand in hand with these visionary ladies.  The rebel in me wholeheartedly approves of the shake up they are giving the plus size industry. They are showing the clothing on everyday ladies, with NO photoshop!

I’m not going to ramble on too much, here are some photos, you can shop the collection on CoolGalBlue.com

This trapeze tee dress will most likely become my summer uniform, especially paired with these lace shorts! The fabric and weight of the tunic is so soft and hangs really nicely, but it moves well and I think it will be breezy and cool.  I’ll probably be wearing these shorts under ever short dress I own, I love the peekaboo lace hemline! I am wearing a 2X in the top and a 3X in the shorts.

I accessorized this look with the white round arrow sunnies for contrast, I adore how over sized they are, I can’t wait to people watch poolside or on patios behind these shades! I think we all know I’m a sucker for cat ears, These are a more 3D with the beading, so they stand up pert and purrrfectly!

This longline slit top is a dream! It’s so breezy and soft, I adore how it catches the wind! This is perfect for pairing with short shorts { perhaps my lace shorts? } or even worn as a beach cover up! It’s semi sheer, but not too sheer, so a cute bikini or swimsuit will look ultra posh underneath! I’m sporting a 3X, it’s roomy, just how I like it, I wore a black lace bandeau underneath for these photos.

The faux leather track pants are rad as hell! I’m wearing a 3X and the fit is really nice and comfortable, there is a bit of stretch as well. The design is really cool and THEY HAVE POCKETS! and not teeny tiny pockets either, but REAL pockets! They can easily go from day to night and add the perfect amount of edge!

I accessorized this look with the tortoise shell round sunnies, metallic tattoos on my fingers and a double strand arrow necklace! Oh and the most beautiful blazer ever. This floral blazer is embossed and the texture is divine! I adore the little gold zips on each side and there is a good amount of stretch! They sent me a 2x, but I think my bewbs require a 3x to sit properly, but my arms fit nicely. It is flippin’ gorgeous!

I just want to thank any and all of you in advance for purchasing any of these pieces! If this collection is a success, I will get to pick more collections with even more items!

My heart is so full of love, gratitude and excitement, it could just burst!

❤ ❤ ❤

SQUEEEEEE!!

Ok, if you follow me on facebook or instagram, then the cat is already out of the bag, but if you’re not following me elsewhere

  1. You totes are missing out 😉
  2. You have no idea that I am working with Cool Gal Blue to bring you a mini collection, curated by me!

SQUEEEEEE!!

Seriously, I am through the roof, over the moon and possibly past Saturn with my excitement on this!

I have worked with Cool Gal before to showcase their Valentines Day lookbook and as a thank you, they sent me this amazing tutu which I did a mini feature on, because It. Is. Glorious!

When I heard they were looking to work with bloggers to curate collections, you better believe I was all over that.

I’m pretty sure I went ultrasonic and only dogs down the block could hear my “Squee” when I opened my email that said they wanted to work with me!

Cool Gal Blue x Margot Meanie

As soon as I came down from cloud 9 I got werk!

I have since been working to build a mini collection that is cohesive, edgy, fun, dramatic and easy to mix & match. I cannot wait to share these items with you! I really tried to stick to my personal aesthetic and chose pieces that I desperately wanted in my own wardrobe and I hope you will too!

I cannot wait to introduce you to my first mini collection with them. So, please, keep an eye out and feel free to sign up for my brand spankin’ new newsletter. { I’m still trying to figure it out, but I thought this is a great opportunity to set one up, so you can be the first to know when my collection drops. }

I am so honoured that Cool Gal Blue wants to work with me and believes in who I am and who I want to represent.

They truly are trying to change the game and make #fashionforthemajority accessible, fun, inclusive and stylish. They want to show you what their clothes look like on real bodies. They are actually listening to what we have all been asking for and working to implement it in practical ways and not just giving us the same old tired answer of “but this is how it’s always been done”

If you haven’t checked out Cool Gal Blue before, I urge you to see what’s cookin’ right meow!

Though I have already picked the items for the first collection I would really like to know what you want to see in future collabs and collections or what you’re hoping to see in this first collection in the comments. And while you’re at it, let me know what you would like to see in a newsletter, how often you would want to hear from me { I’ve been thinking sending a monthly round up and bonus mail outs when I have special announcements like giveaways, special discount codes and collaborations? }

I’ve had a LOT of fun styling up this tutu all week!!  I’m positive this piece will be popping up on the blog in the future!

tutu – c/o Cool Gal Clothing | top – pacificplex { sold out } | ring – La Plume Noir  { sold out }

Today I went for an ultra classic look, completely inspired by Dita Von Teese.  This look would be so much fun to wear to the horse track on a Derby day, especially if I could get my paws on a epic hat like the ones Pearls & Swine dream up.

I’m can’t say I’m a fan of peplum tops, at least for my own aesthetic.  They always look darling on so many other women, I just never feel right with them on.  But I do love how this sits on such a flared bottom.  It’s actually a part of my wedding dress and I bought it and designed my wedding dress with that idea in mind.

Instead of going full on black & white monochromatic I decided to add in another neutral with the wide brimmed straw sun hat. Which in turn allowed me to add the pink vintage beaded purse with it’s bamboo handle for a tiny splash of colour. I think it rounds out the vintage/classic charm….and it matches the pink gem on my ring!

You can check the other outfits in my “how to rock a tutu” series here”

I’ll be sure to place it in same tag when I wear this tutu again so you can see them all together!
