outfit | goodbye, farewell Domino Dollhouse

I was originally going to title this post “and the sky was made of amethyst” or “bricks are heavy” as I usually title my posts after lyrics or song titles. But that’s not the only reason why, it’s also because I am featuring this killer pretend that we’re dead grid print vest from indie plus retailer, Domino Dollhouse.

The entire line is inspired by grunge goddesses like Hole, Garbage, L7

It was kind of a match made in heaven.

But  I changed the title last minute as sad news hit late last week, Tracy, owner and designer of Domino Dollhouse let the cat out the bag, Domino Dollhouse will be closing.

I know, you’re heart is probably crumbling right now. In just a short two week span, we have lost two pillars of the alt indie plus community. { CandyStrike has also closed it’s doors, Elizabeth has started school again and the load was too much to carry both her indie brand and a full school course. }

Though Candy Strikes closure was much more swift, Domino Dollhouse will be around until November. So you still have a chance to snag a few pieces from her latest line, Doll Parts.

I am so happy to finally have a piece of Domino Dollhouse in my wardrobe.

I remember about 3 or 4 years ago when I finally became aware of her shop. I was in a rut and desperately searching for awesome alternative clothing choices and not just making due with what I could get elsewhere. The very first item I coveted was a bright pink floral moto vest, much like this one I have here.

It was a bold, feminine, in your face, holy-shit-I’ve-never-seen-anything-like-this-in-plus-size-before kind of revelation. The vest was sold out of my size, but my eyes were watching what was going on.

Through DD I was introduced to Tess Holiday { then she was known as Tess Munster } who I started following on instagram, way back when my feed was nothing more than drag queens, make up artists and tattooers. I look at my feed now and it’s a fatshion, body positive, weirdo arty collective of awesome that I can’t imagine my day’s without! { the drag queens are still there too! }

So I have to thank Domino Dollhouse, even though it took me so long to finally own a piece, and I regret I don’t own more, they kind of sent me on course to realise a truth of mine, that plus size fashion is my absolute passion in life and there are other ways to get involved that I had never conceived before.

Thank you, for serving our community so well for so many years! Good luck with your growing family! I will await and hopefully be part of the next new thing to spring up for us alt plus gals.

So here we find ourselves down two alternative plus resources. Where are we to turn next? Who will rise to occasion and fill the gap? It’s clear there are plenty of alternative plus gals around, but where shall we shop, who will design for us?

outfit | killing me softly

I swoon!

Over these photos taken by Jesse Smith and particularly over this Bianca chiffon duster from SWAK.

I told you you’d get sick of this hat!!! But it’s in one more outfit from this shoot day, so bare with me.

I have to say, I felt pretty powerful in this outfit. The duster would catch the breeze and I felt like a frickin model! This is going to be very popular over a simple outfit of black leggings with a tank and it will notch the fashion level up on such a comfy and simple outfit.

It comes in two prints, but my heart belongs to black lace, so it was the obvious pick for me!

It’s just so pretty!

Something else about these photos, I am wearing ankle booties, with bare legs. This is something young me would have never done. I used to HATE my stems with a fiery passion. If I wore anything that cut me off above the ankle I thought I looked atrocious. But now, my legs may just be my favourite body part! I love showing them off and I get compliments all the time!

Just goes to show, that tailoring your media can open your eyes that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. And it allows you the chance to see it in yourself and in others.

outfit | oh my stars

You guys!!!!

I had the MOST fun last week on my first official photo shoot with someone other than my husband. Someone with a real camera and not just an ipad! She has official photosoot stuff with her, like a grey board and shade screens! K, I don’t know the official names of those instruments, but she had them!

So here is the first outfit out of four we shot that night. Sadly this swing dress in star  print from ASOS  sold out so flippin fast { scratch that, they have a couple in UK 26 left!!}! But they have some other cute stars prints in right now, like this pencil skirt, which I would love to own!

star print swing dress – ASOS curve | moon and star arm cuff – ASOS curve | Breckelle Pointy Toe Lace Up Booties – urbanog | wide brim fedora – Forever21

I am all shades of smitten with every aspect of this outfit!

Soon as I saw this dress, I knew it had to be mine. But since it was selling so fast, I settled for a size smaller than I had wanted. It still fits, but it pulls a bit over the bust. I had wanted a UK 24 but got the 22 instead.

I absolutely HAD to have the moon and star arm cuff to go with! This cuff is meant for your upper arm, but I elected to give it a twist so I could wear it on my forearm so its visible with this dress.

The booties are part of a bit of a binge I had on urbanog, I bought myself 4 pairs of booties, but I remember last Autumn, I was so bummed that I had missed out on three pairs I liked but had sold out before I had the dough to buy them. Well, I am set for boot this year, I tells ya!!

And lastly….this hat! This. Hat!!! I have swooned over the wide brimmed Yves St Laurent hats for a few years now, knowing they would never enter my life. I had found a few that had smaller brims, but just hadn’t bitten the bullet and treated myself. Now I am happy I waited!! This hat is EVERYTHING! You think you’ve seen my wide brimmed pork pie hat a lot, well buckle your belts, it’s ON with this hat!!! Margot Meanie | Canadian plus size bloggerMargot Meanie | Canadian plus size bloggerMargot Meanie | Canadian plus size blogger

outfit | I’ve been a bad, bad girl

We may have been putting off our taxes a wee bit, I know, we’re terrible BUT we finally did them a couple months back and mailed them in. After waiting two and a half months after we posted them off we received our return and we’ve each been shopping up a storm since, so you’re going to be seeing a LOT of new outfit posts in the coming weeks!

I treated myself to four pairs of new boots { that’s right, FOUR!!! }, a mini haul from ASOS, another from boohoo { you’ve seen one item so far} a lil something from Domino Dollhouse which I cant wait to share and a big haul from Forever 21 for both Mister Meanie and myself.

Still on the docket, I have yet to order a body chain from Ready to Stare because I’m stumped on which one and which colour…I think I have it down to the pentagram harness, but in black or gold? HALP ME!! And I will wait ever so diligently until the Boleyn dress is back in stock on Chubby Cartwheels.

I may have also splurged on an Ipsy subscription and a whole bunch of liquid mattes from ColourPop! It’s been ridiculous fun.

duster vest –  c/o SWAK | shimmer disco pants – ASOS | solid lug sole boots – urbanog

This outfit is featuring my new disco pants from ASOS, my new Joan of Arc { clone high anyone?! } stomping platform boots from urbanog and a perfectly gorgeous terri chiffon duster gifted to me by SWAK.

I have been craving disco pants for sometime, ever since I first saw them on a straight size friends butt.  I have coveted them. Now these aren’t the exact ones I wanted with the high waist, zipper button closure on the front and pockets on the derrière, but they do have the shine I was going for. These are basically just spandex straight outta the 80’s/90’s, but they are comfy and I think they look badass! Especially with these boots, but they’re gonna look awesome with all my boots { eeeps, I can’t wait to show you them all!! }

This vest though? It’s so pretty and gives my all too often all black on black on black looks a much needed and totally fun pop of colour. I love how it flows, the cut is really pretty and I even dig on the pattern, which I all too often shy away from. This is a winner that will make it into many outfits! I can’t wait to rock it with my black crop top and a black tube skirt! Oh and the vest is on sale now!!

If I had the budget, I could easily turn into one of those girls with a “shoe problem”  though  I would never see it as a problem, as you’d always have the shoes you wish you had for each outfit variation!

I’m really digging all the big chunky shoes lately.  They totally remind me of the nineties, though a tad more chic.  I’m also falling for other styles, which I never thought I’d go for, like strappy heels, kinda ugly yet cool booties or tobacco colour flats.

It’s a whole new world of fashion I’ve opened myself up to and I’m LOVING every minute of it….even more so if I could own them all!

These are my top picks after perusing around urbanog’s MASSIVE shoe selection.  They are all fast fashion finds, which means they are cheap cheap cheap, making it a lot easier to own all the trendy shoes you’re currently coveting.  Seriously, the most expensive pair here is $40 the cheapest is $15!!  You definitely need to hunt through, as they have some gawd awful footwear in there and some strange and fascinating {almost of the verge of avant garde, if matched with the right outfit}  items as well, but I have no doubt you’ll find some shoes that appeal to your tastes!

Of course the quality may not last through multiple seasons, but I’m usually ok with that, as I never have the funds to invest in high quality shoes, especially on a collection.  But since most of them are heels and wouldn’t be getting tones and tonnes of everyday wear, i think they’d last until next year at least!
